The Chieftains - The Bells of Dublin

Gosh ! What can I say about this rare gem...
I'll only state that it features one my my fave from all the (not so) ingenue yule tunes fromall times: Jackson Browne's The Rebel Jesus
take a look at the lyrics...

All the streets are filled with laughter and light
And the music of the season
And the merchants' windows are all bright
With the faces of the children
And the families hurrying to their homes
While the sky darkens and freezes
Will be gathering around the hearths and tables
Giving thanks for God's graces
And the birth of the rebel Jesus

Well they call him by 'the Prince of Peace'
And they call him by 'the Savior'
And they pray to him upon the seas
And in every bold endeavor
And they fill his churches with their pride and gold
As their faith in him increases
But they've turned the nature that I worship in
From a temple to a robber's den
In the words of the rebel Jesus

Well we guard our world with locks and guns
And we guard our fine possessions
And once a year when Christmas comes
We give to our relations
And perhaps we give a little to the poor
If the generosity should seize us
But if any one of us should interfere
In the business of why there are poor
They get the same as the rebel Jesus

Now pardon me if I have seemed
To take the tone of judgement
For I've no wish to come between
This day and your enjoyment
In a life of hardship and of earthly toil
There's a need for anything that frees us
So I bid you pleasure
And I bid you cheer
From a heathen and a pagan
On the side of the rebel Jesus

Paul Carrack & The SWR Big Band: A Soulful Christmas

This is a collection of songs sung by Paul Carrack- the most famous
singer that no-one appears to have heard of! Paul was the lead singer of
Squeeze and Mike and the Mechanics amongst others and wrote the
wonderful "How Long" when he was in the band 'Ace.'

If you like Christmassy songs then this CD is for you. Paul Carrack has
a wonderful soulful voice and this album is made with a large "big band"
sound.

In December 2005, Carrack released Winter Wonderland, a Christmas album
backed by the legendary SWR Big Band. The album, which was also released
under the name A Soulful Christmas in Germany (with added tracks and a
slightly different album cover), featured a number of holiday standards
plus a cover of Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World" and a new big
band version of the Carrack song "Beautiful World." In support of this
album, Paul Carrack resumed his rigorous touring schedule of Europe.

17. Pilgrim Travelers/I'll Be Home For Christmas [0:02:31.13]
18. Lightening Hopkins/Happy New Year [0:03:14.20]

Blue Yule is without question one of the hippest collections of rhythm & blues Christmas music ever assembled. The disc boasts the likes of Louis Jordan, John Lee Hooker, the gospel-powered Pilgrim Travelers, and Johnny and Edgar Winter, as well as the likes of Detroit Junior ("Christmas Day") and Canned Heat ("Christmas Blues"). Lengthy even by contemporary CD standards, this 18-tracker also includes Charles Brown, Big Jack Johnson, Roy Milton, and the inscrutable Lightnin' Hopkins wishing you both "Merry Christmas" and "Happy New Year." But perhaps the set's greatest gift is also it's strangest--Sonny Boy Williamson's "Santa Claus," a rousing midtempo blues-rocker with a biting harp break and weird, funky lyrics about Sonny Boy going through his wife's drawers. --Martin Keller
